Steel

Marine Cargo Experts Ltd has accumulated considerable expertise in the surveying of high value coated and uncoated steel coils, for both import and export, together with the surveying of structural steel.

We can advise on efficient and safe handling methods, storage in warehouses, plus stowage and securing in vessels, within containers and on trailers.

We are experienced in damage prevention and, depending on our remit, would be able to advise both the ship’s personnel and the port stevedores on these issues.

We have experience of acting on behalf of Shippers, Charterers, P & I Clubs and Ship Owners at the loading and discharge of steel products.

Pre-shipment Inspections

For all parties we issue a comprehensive report and photographic evidence of all damages; for P & I Clubs/Ship Owners, these are made available for insertion on Mates receipts and thence Bills of Lading.

Post-shipment investigations

For follow-up investigations, MCE will provide a detailed assessment as to the likely sources of any mechanical damage, contamination and corrosion.

When MCE are appointed, we inspect and report on all aspects of the operation such as:

The handling

Equipment and techniques used during coil movements which may affect the final condition of the coil.

Storage

Inspection of warehousing and stowage, prior to shipment.

Stowage in vessel

We can advise the Master of the best and most efficient methods for a secure and safe stow which will avoid damage to packing and product or to the vessel.  This will ensure that the coil weight distribution per square metre (tonnes/m2) is not exceeded for tank top or tween-deck, and adequate layers/ rows of timber dunnage are used.

Securing

Advising the Master of correct methods to use for securing the coils (‘lashing’) so that ‘coil movement’ can be prevented on the sea passage.

Ventilation and Contamination

Advising the best methods to avoid any damage to the products from condensation and cross contamination by former or other co-shipped cargoes.
